Symbolic Ocean Depths Image Manipulation & Conceptual Artwork
Overview
This project involved the creation of a conceptual image manipulation artwork developed in a colorful caricature-inspired style. The objective was to design a visually engaging composition that combines strong aesthetics with deeper symbolic meaning, encouraging viewers to interpret the story behind the image.
Concept & Direction
The artwork is divided into two contrasting sections. Above the surface, a calm ocean scene features a boat navigating between rocky formations, with a lantern placed on one of the rocks acting as a symbol of guidance, hope, and direction.
Below the waterline, the scene reveals a girl descending deeper into the ocean while holding onto a book. This hidden lower half introduces emotional depth and metaphorical storytelling, representing themes such as knowledge, struggle, isolation, inner battles, or the weight of unseen emotions beneath a calm exterior.
The contrast between the peaceful surface and the dramatic underwater descent was intentionally designed to reflect the difference between what is visible and what remains hidden.
Design & Development Process
The artwork was created through a full image manipulation and compositing workflow. Key focus areas included:
- Split-scene storytelling composition
- Vibrant caricature-style color treatment
- Surface vs underwater contrast in lighting and mood
- Symbolic placement of objects (boat, lantern, book)
- Depth effects and motion to emphasize descent
- Emotional narrative through visual metaphor
Special attention was given to balancing playful visual style with meaningful emotional impact.
